Intensification of weather occurrences such as storms may lead to coral destruction. Overfishing whacks out of balance ecosystem in many ways, such as reduction of fish which eat algae, allowing it to overgrow the corals or destruction of the coral structures with inappropriate fishing practices and equipment.

Plastic waste, the presence of which increases in the oceans, wraps around corals, blocking their access to sun and oxygen and leading to the development of viruses and bacteria.
