Let’s refer to this mental chatter as the monkey mind in this lesson. Most of the times, you succumb to this chatter, letting your awareness follow it and missing all that is happening to you – missing life itself. Ruminations about past or worries about the future make you time-shuttle between the two, never having an intermediate stop at the present.
But focusing on your breathing, you create this stop in the time travel, you come to the present moment – the essence of mindfulness. How is it possible? Because breath makes you realize that this is what happens at this exact moment. You are breathing now, and the breath forms one with the time and shifts its location in it as much as the present is a constant moving continuum. You concentrate on the breath, and you become part of this present as well – you live in now, and you move with now.
