Stress reaction

The stress reaction is what kicks in automatically by Autonomic Nervous System. When the brain sees a situation as dangerous, which is a result of past events and belief systems, it presses the alarm button and causes coping mechanisms which are not always good for you. Unhealthy coping techniques may be alcohol or substance abuse, workaholism, smoking, or binge eating.

With this, you don’t really address the stressor but find refuge in addictive activities to forget what happened.
