Preparing for meditation

Breathing during meditation should be relaxed and natural. It should feel comfortable to breathe. The straight spine helps with this, by opening your chest and facilitating the flow of the air. It is best to use abdominal breathing in meditation, because it has a calming effect of your nervous system, relaxing you further.

Your breath should be smooth and slow naturally, which is not possible when you are stressed or overly alert. Preparation before meditation, such as mindful movement and pranayama, assist you in bringing your resting breathing rate down. Cleansing breathing (such as Kapalbhati, done before a yoga practice, never before meditation) will help you unblock your airwaves and make your breath smooth and soundless.
