Plants and carbon

carbon cycle explained

Plants participate in the carbon cycle by breathing in carbon dioxide (CO2) and breathing out the oxygen (O). Carbon gets stored in the plants, and with the help of nutrients from the soil, sunshine and water make sugars, called carbohydrates. These sugars can subsequently be consumed by people and animals and carbon, making them up released back to the atmosphere as CO2.

So you know that carbon cant’s just disappear, but it transforms from one form to another. It circulates between the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and soil. To get from the atmosphere back to the Earth, carbon needs to get absorbed by something. And the best absorption things are called carbon sinks. You learn about them next.
