Permafrost is defined as soil that has been permanently frozen for at least two years. When this soil gets thawing because of higher temperatures, carbon which is stored inside gets released with access to oxygen. Microbes which are found deeper in permafrost wake up and start their anaerobic process of releasing methane. Hence permafrost will add more of both gases, CO2 and CH4.
