Gratitude applies to everything. When you are grateful, you appreciate all the things you take for granted. But of course, it is easier to start developing this attitude with small things first and with the ones that do not cause you pain. Such as breathing and the small pause which you experience at the end of each exhale and before you take a new breath in.
You can think of this pause as the time your whole body needs before it is ready to take in a new supply of oxygen and redistribute it to all the cells. Liken this pause to the one that you give your mind with meditation and breathing practices – a moment of rest before it gets back into running and processing the lifestyle you expose it to. Be grateful that you have this possibility to pause and take a break. Be proud of yourself every time you manage to create this additional break on purpose; when before reacting, you pause, and you choose the reaction.
