When waste decomposes, anaerobic processes release methane in the atmosphere, where it becomes a greenhouse gas that traps heat and adds to global warming. It also releases CO2 and other gases. We can use landfill gas as a source of energy instead of other fossil fuels. Landfill gas can even be used as a car fuel.
Landfill gas collection systems have been in use for some time, however not all the landfills are equipped with them. When the gas is captured, it can either be destroyed by combustion in flares or transferred to facilities which convert this gas into energy. Energy obtained in this way is considered renewable since organic waste is not going to disappear, it is a part of the natural process of human existence.
