Non-doing in breathing

The pause, or the gap between doing and non-doing is also observable in breathing. Just observe your normal breath for a moment. Do you breathe non-stop, or do you have a gap after the exhale and before you take another breath in? This gap that you observe is natural and is present in healthy breathing.

In Pranayama this gap is called Kumbhaka and is also subject to control and extension on more advanced levels.

When you are practicing a new breathing exercise today – bring your focus to this extra space that you experience in your breathing naturally. Learn to anchor your attention in this pause, and you will learn how to bring yourself to the present moment in stressful situations quickly. You simply take a few breaths concentrating on the gap to remind yourself of a mindful pause in your daily life. The pause that each of us needs but rarely takes.
