When you are told that your emotional response is not adequate in a situation, you believe that others are better experts in this than you are. But this only causes you to despise your emotions (instead of working on your emotional response) and try to suppress them, getting rid of them and become a vegetative potato.
You see, emotions arise out of your control, you can’t really get rid of them or suppress them. What you will cause with this attitude is only more stress both in your mind and the body. You create this image in your head that emotions are always bad and start reinforcing your stress whenever they appear in the body. Then negative automatic thoughts start appearing, and you suddenly find yourself in the endless whirlpool of negative self-talk, causing more emotions and more negative thoughts to arise.
