Less heat-reflective surface

The warming ocean surface triggers other effects, such as the melting of sea ice. Whereas this ice does not contribute to water levels rise (the ice already is floating in the waters, reflected in its volume), it has other effects.

Melting ice release CO2 trapped in it, which contributes to the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Less ice also means a reduction of white reflective surface, which helps Earth to reflect more heat from the sun (Albedo effect – more on it later in the course).
