Humus (do not confuse with the Mediterranean dish, hummus) is what we can find in black soil. It is formed from dead plants and other organic matter as they start to decompose. These soils are very rich in nutrients and are great for plants, helping them grow healthily.

Humus contains even 60% carbon because decomposing plants and other organic matter are rich with carbon which does not escape to the air without access to oxygen (in the soil).
