In terms of greenhouse gases, the AFOLU sector emits massive amounts of CO2, methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). In mitigating global warming, we need to make efforts which would reduce greenhouse emissions from agriculture without compromising food security. We should also ensure that food distribution is improved to reach more people, food waste is reduced, and food transportation is optimized.
While AFOLU guidelines are aimed at policymakers and producers, we as consumers can also play a role in reducing emissions from this sector. Supply is always driven by demand, which is what we create as individuals and collectively. By shifting our consumption patterns, we are empowered to shape the food supply and food production value chain. Let’s then execute this right and help to save our planet!
