People may ignore the environmental side of religion for a couple of reasons. First of all, we have selective attention, and issues which are not highlighted enough usually slip our consciousness. Secondly, because not enough emphasis is put on the urgency of the issue, many people remain unaware of what is happening with the climate.
Interestingly, any religion always references a creator, or creators, a universe or a higher power. In each case, the act of creation was not only to produce a human but also to produce the entire planet and system. The backbone of religion is obedience and respect for the divine creation, which environment is part of. Unfortunately, only a few religions highlight this view in their modern teachings.
