When you are very attuned with your senses, especially the sense of taste, you can let your cravings guide you, because if you have any deficiency in your body, your cravings will make you want to eat food which contains the elements you are missing in your system. This sense is very sharp in pregnant women because they need to deliver additional elements which would also ensure the healthy development of the fetus in their belly. 

As babies, we also know what is good and bad for us. We cry when we are hungry, and we return any excess food that we consume. But as we grow up, we slowly lose this connection with our senses. We develop eating habits (remember, habits are automation) and chose our foods based on culture, tradition or simply what we got used to because we were fed with this.
