Cleaning up the mess

In 1987, the intergovernmental panel gathered to discuss the measures to prevent the situation from worsening. The result of the discussion was the Montreal Protocol, which identified 100 man-made gases depleting the ozone layer. The gases are scheduled to be progressively reduced, with some of them banned straight away. The gases are called Montreal Gases or ozone-depleting substances (ODS).

The good news came at the end of 2018 when the United Nations confirmed the Ozone layer is slowly recovering. It is expected to restore by 2060, but until that time the health hazards from reduced protection which ozone layer provides are expected to be on the rise. Next chapter looks into some of the health repercussion that destroyed ozone layer poses to people and planet.
