Breaking habits

To break habits is much harder than to build new ones. Be very alert when you start repeating things harmful for your body (such as having a pizza every week). To break old bad habits, it is not enough to stop performing the activity involved in the habit.

Firstly, it requires a lot of willpower to resists the automation that the brain has created for you.

Secondly, the whole attention you have will be directed then at the habit and will make you think more of it, reinforcing the trigger.

The best way to get rid of old habits is to create replacement habits (and make sure they are good for you).
